My issue was similar: SSIS 2005 and Excel Source giving a preview error. My sheetname had no spaces on it, however it was all numbers, eg. instead of "Sheet 1" the sheet was named "4035" By changing the sheetname to "S4035" the problem was solved. Thanks for the tip.
